Green Mapmakers are welcome to create their own local place-based icons and use them alongside Green Map System's set of globally-designed Icons. Some are used by other Green Map projects in the region, and a few have been adopted into our shared iconography during our periodic updates . Thus, they are important indicators of sustainability, and help inform Green Map System of important trends within our movement.

Creating local icons is especially popular with the children involved in expressive Green Mapmaking. At least half the Icons on any Green Map should be from the official set, though!
